Tactical Assault Panel (TAP) Chest Rig – OCP | USGI IssueThe Tactical Assault Panel — commonly called the TAP, TAPS, or TAP chest rig — is the U.S. Army’s current modular load carriage platform, introduced to replace the Fighting Load Carrier (FLC) vest. This authentic USGI example in Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) holds up to eight 5.56mm magazines, mounts directly to the IOTV, MTV, and most MOLLE-compatible plate carriers, and runs standalone with the included Y-harness. Issued under NSN 8465-01-580-0689, this is genuine U.S. Government Issue — not a commercial reproduction.TAP Chest Rig Design: Speed and EfficiencyThe TAP carries up to eight USGI 5.56mm magazines across six integrated front pouches with hook-and-loop flap closures. The two outer pockets are slightly larger, designed for handheld radios such as the PRC-152 or MBITR, and can also accept an additional magazine each — bringing total capacity to ten if needed. Three rear admin pockets store maps, notebooks, and mission tools: two secured with hook-and-loop, one with a zipper. Three rows of MOLLE/PALS webbing across the front panel support mission-specific pouch expansion.TAP Chest Rig Use: Armor-Mounted or StandaloneStandalone (Y-harness): Thread the shoulder straps through the upper corner loops, adjust for ride height, and connect the chest strap. The panel sits centered on your chest and is adjustable to fit over body armor or directly on a uniform.IOTV / MTV mount: Use the included split-bar side release buckles to attach to your carrier’s cummerbund MOLLE. Shoulder adapters connect the upper corners to the carrier’s shoulder straps to control ride height. Compatible with IOTV Gen 2, 3, and 4 and the MTV (Modular Tactical Vest).Plate carrier mount: Most modern plate carriers accept the TAP’s side tabs directly onto the cummerbund MOLLE or via a placard system. This creates a low-profile front panel that reduces snag hazards and sits flush against the armor.New panels include the full hardware set for all three configurations. Used panels typically include the Y-harness only — sufficient for standalone wear or if you already have your carrier’s attachment hardware. Check out our set-up guide.Magazine compatibilityThe six front pouches are designed around USGI 5.56mm 30-round aluminum magazines. One magazine fits per cell with the hook-and-loop flap closed; two can be double-stacked per cell with the flap tucked. Gen 2 and Gen 3 PMAGs fit reliably in all six pouches. AK-pattern 7.62×39mm magazines fit one per cell — do not double-stack curved mags. Commercial polymer mags with oversized feed lips may require a fit check before field use.Built to Military StandardsConstructed from 1000-denier Cordura® nylon with reinforced stitching throughout. The fabric resists abrasion, moisture, and hard field use. Every unit is authentic U.S. Government Issue manufactured to military specification — not a commercial clone. Contractors include Eagle Industries, Specialty Defense Systems, and BAE Systems depending on lot.OCP: The Current StandardOperational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) is the current U.S. Army uniform standard, replacing ACU/UCP across all branches. OCP integrates directly with modern plate carriers, packs, and pouches. For soldiers replacing CIF-issued gear, OCP ensures uniform compliance. For civilians and range use, it remains the most relevant and versatile camouflage option currently available.Condition grades — Smith’s Surplus 4-point inspectionEvery TAP panel is physically inspected before listing. Here’s what each grade means:Very Good — Light surface wear. All hardware fully functional. Harness straps intact. Ready to issue.Good — Moderate field use. Possible fading or minor abrasion. All closures and MOLLE webbing functional. Small cosmetic flaws only.Fair — Evidence of heavy use. May show scuffing, patch residue, or minor thread pulls. Structurally sound and fully functional. Best for training or budget builds.Note: Used TAPs may not include all original mounting hardware. If you need MTV straps or IOTV split buckles, contact us and we’ll do our best to match your kit.Product FeaturesAuthentic USGI Tactical Assault Panel (TAP) — not a commercial reproductionOperational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) — current U.S. Army standardHolds up to eight 5.56mm USGI magazines across six front pouchesTwo outer radio/utility pockets — fit PRC-152, MBITR, or additional magsThree rear admin pockets (two hook-and-loop, one zipper)Three rows MOLLE/PALS webbing for modular expansionCompatible with IOTV Gen 2/3/4, MTV, SPCS, and most plate carriersStandalone chest rig use via included Y-harness1000D Cordura® nylon — abrasion and moisture resistantReinforced stitching throughoutNSNs: 8465-01-580-0689, 8465-01-641-8924Frequently asked questionsWhat does TAP stand for?TAP stands for Tactical Assault Panel. The TAP includes a Y-harness for standalone chest rig wear. The harness adjusts to fit over a uniform or body armor. What magazines fit in the TAP chest rig?The TAP holds up to eight 5.56mm magazines across six front pouches and two radio/utility pockets. Do not double-stack curved mags. What is the NSN for the OCP Tactical Assault Panel? The OCP TAP is issued under NSN 8465-01-580-0689. A second lot NSN is 8465-01-641-8924. The ACU/UCP version uses NSN 8465-01-583-6329.What is the difference between the TAP and the A-TAP?The standard TAP uses a Y-harness and is designed to mount flat against a plate carrier as a low-profile front panel. The Airborne Tactical Assault Panel (A-TAP) uses an H-Harness with First Spear Tube quick-release buckles and three independent MOLLE panels — designed for parachute compatibility and extended standalone wear. See our A-TAP chest rig if you need a rig that works with a parachute harness or a heavy ruck.
